How to take a sample for mineral analysis

How to Take a Soil Sample

Remove any surface debris such as grass, leaves, mulch, or sticks from the area where you plan to sample. This ensures that the soil you collect reflects the true composition of the ground.

Collect the Soil Sample

Using an apple corer, take a core sample to a depth of 4 inches. Place the soil into a clean plastic bag. Repeat this process 10 times in your selected sampling area, mixing all samples together in the same bag to get a representative sample.

Multiple samples may need to be taken if you have multiple beds, or areas of sick plants vs area of healthy plants etc. (please call with questions about where to sample)

Label the Sample

With a permanent marker, clearly write the sample name on the outside of the plastic bag. Include details that help you remember the location or purpose of the sample (e.g., “Front Lawn”, “Vegetable Garden”, etc.).

Package and Mail the Sample

Place the labeled soil sample into a box along with the completed Logan Labs soil submission form. Make sure the form is filled out completely and accurately.
